In the world of software development, it is easy to get caught up in a constant race to solve what is urgent. Last minute bugs, tickets that can't wait, unexpected customer requests, deadlines that run faster than our own calendar. It happens to us often. And when we work remotely, that urgency can feel even more intense, because “are you available” seems to have no schedule.
But in the midst of that accelerated pace, we asked ourselves a question worth sharing: what are we leaving aside every time we prioritize the urgent over the important?
Because what is important rarely shouts. It does not have alerts or red messages. It's something that could wait... but if we always postpone it, we pay dearly.
We are talking about planning well before executing. To do retros calmly. To learn new tools. To optimize processes that always waste time. To take care of the mental health of our teams. The important thing is what builds a base. And without a basis, any urgency ends up faltering.
At Virtual Remote Partner we learned, through experience, that what is urgent is often a consequence of not having given time to what is important. Putting out fires can feel like moving forward, but many times we're just going in circles.
Therefore, we made some concrete decisions to change that dynamic:
- We reserved weekly moments only for planning, without interruptions.
- We created spaces for continuous learning, even if it is 45 minutes per week.
- We often asked ourselves: is this urgent or does it just seem urgent?
- We gave real value to rest: knowing how to stop is also part of performance.
- We stopped romanticizing “delivery against the clock.” Quality takes time.
It's not always easy.
There are weeks that overflow again. But having this awareness helps us recalibrate. Not to fall into the automatism of urgency. To work with intention, not just with speed.
Because at the end of the day, doing what is important is what makes the difference.
“Working in technology should not be running an endless race. What is important takes time”
We invite you to slow down your day to think about “the important thing” that you are leaving aside, organize your agenda and establish yourself in your routine from now on, an undisputed time to carry it out.
